NUI TYPE, Custom design typeface

My final project for Master of Design at Edinburgh College of Art, UK.

The concept

I wanted to create typeface that symbolized my subject of study and
field of interest, Identity through typeface design. One particularly
inspirational text was Alan Fletcher’s The Art Of Looking Sideways.
In his book he compared the identity of individuals with their shadow.
He claims that ‘a shadow belongs to a person as much as their face.
No two are the same. Furthermore, they change according to dress,
location, season, and time of day’.

From this initial idea, it was evident that identity design is a reflection
of the person or organisation that it stands for. The reflection is like a
shadow, so identity = shadow. Moreover, the shadow gives a sense
of interaction between object and light. It changes according to
background, time and light.
